Badminton Sessions
Held every Thursday afternoon at Bitterne Leisure Centre. I have 14 Service Users who come to the session. Sue is the coach who shows us techniques and gets us ready for competitions. Pete is a Volunteer who comes and helps the group. Si comes from Sembal and we also have Sarah, Matthews's mum who comes to play.
During a session, we do a fun and different warm up. We then go into groups and practise different techniques with Sue and Pete. This could be looking at footwork, lightly hitting the shuttle and hitting the shuttle far and harder. We then get into pairs and play games, swapping around so we play different players. At the end of the session we have a warm down game, which usually is a throwing game. Sue then decides who the player of the week is and they get to keep the trophy for the week.
We participate in Badminton Competitions in Bournemouth in October. Last year, we took 7 Service Users down. It was my first competition and the guys played really well. This year, we are sending 3 Service Users to Sheffield for the Special Olympics National Games.
I started playing badminton in January 2016, when I took over the sessions. I had not played before so I was a total beginner. I learnt from Sue, Pete and the guys, the technique and the skills I needed to play. I love playing badminton now, I don't like to book a Thursday off work! I go to Chamberlayne Leisure Centre and play with my mum in my spare time.
Sessions are £2 per person and held at Bitterne Leisure Centre every Thursday at 1:30-2:30pm.
